Paintings and Prints of the East Anglian Coast
On such a windy and wild day the coastline will take a bashing. So it seemed appropriate to sketch the Pill box that has fallen off the cliff top and that now lies perched against the fragile face. High tide was coming. It is not so long ago that this was a little way inland, never defeated in war but defeated by nature and the relentless sea.
The pool beside the hide at Island Mere, RSPB Minsmere. The wind kept rippling the water and kept the Bearded Reedlings and Reed Buntings deep in the reeds. Over the reeds Marsh Harriers were constantly quartering.
The rain clouds were gathering out at sea as I made this sketch on kessingland beach.
Anyone who knows this part of the coast will be familiar with the Phragmites Reed. This one was from Potters Bridge near Southwold where it forms an extensive reedbed. At this time of year we have last years seed heads.
