Week 44, 2017 Colour sketch challenge

Rowan Berries

I thought that I should paint some berries which I could bring to the studio, so off around the country lanes I went. I thought it was going to be Rose Hips or Hawthorn but as I drove around I realised that there are very few red berries in the hedgerows. So eventually I remembered where there are some Rowan trees with their red berries.

Week 43, 2017 Colour sketch challenge

Silver Darling

It wouldn’t be right living on the East Anglian coast not to include these as they are so deeply embedded into both the local history and indeed my own families past. I love the way the scales sparkle. Herring fishing in East Anglia goes back to the Middle Ages but the heyday was between 1860 and the first word war, sadly by the 1960’s over fishing caused stocks to crash.

Week 42, 2017 Colour sketch challenge

Kessingland seascape

Friday and the sea was really very rough. My studio assistant Pippa my faithful hound accompanied me to the beach whilst I painted this weeks sketch. The Common seal pup was hauled up on the beach but went for the safety of the sea as Pippa approached. I was a little concerned as she followed it into the huge waves but she gave up and I breathed a sigh of relief. Crashing waves on the beach are one of my favorite things.
